Whether you are looking for breeding stock, a meat pig or simply an friendly outdoor pet to live with your other pigs, Meishans will fit your requirements.
AS A MEAT AND LARD PIG
Remember when meat tasted good? Most of that flavour came from fat, especially in
the case of pork. In the 1940s, the ratio of fat to lean meat on pigs was 50–50. Fat means flavour and in the case of the Meishans, its this high percentage of fat that gives the meat an exquisite sweet taste. Meishans carry around 2.5 -3 inches of back fat making them ideal for making Pancetta, Guanciale and Lardo, a delectable Italian charcuterie made by curing backfat. In Italy it is often cut thinly and served as an anitipasto. The exceptionally juicy, well-marbled meat lends itself perfectly for cured meats such as salamis, hams and prosciutto as well as joints, bacon etc.
In Japan it is considered a delicacy where it regularly appears on menus in top-class restaurants. Similar to our traditional breeds, Meishans are slow growing but can be taken to the abattoir at around 7-9 months.
BREEDING STOCK
Meishans are renowned for being the most prolific breeding pig in the world and are used extensively in the states and Canada to improve fertility and litter size in commercial breeds.
The first scottish litter was born in October 2012 and we are looking forward - as the first english Meishan breeders - to the first litter due this Month (February). Another young unrelated Meishan boar will be arriving next year, with further unrelated stock boars and gilts coming in as time progresses, to ensure the future breeding by smallholders and farmers across the UK is based on unrelated bloodlines ensuring good healthy sound stock. All piglets born will be wormed and identified with tags
PET AND COMPANION PIG
If you are a farm park, a farm bed and breakfast, a country estate or simply a smallholder looking for an outdoor pet pig, to live with your other pigs, then Meishans are ideal. Their unusual looking face is always a hit with people as is their personality which is friendly and easy to manage. Perfect for families and unlike many other breeds Meishans are not interested in looking for ways to escape, they would much rather eat and sleep. All boars will be castrated.
